Huskers drop overtime thriller to Texas Tech

By Sean Callahan

LUBBOCK, Texas – There is no such thing as a moral victory, but there are a quite a bit of positives that Nebraska can take out of Saturday’s 37-31 overtime loss to No. 7 ranked Texas Tech.

In a game where the Huskers were a decisive 21 point underdog to the Red Raiders, NU offensive coordinator Shawn Watson comprised an offensive game plan that racked up 471 yards of total offense and chewed up 40:12 of clock in the process.

Nebraska found themselves in a 24-10  hole in the third quarter, but back-to-back touchdown drives by the Husker offense tied the game at 24-24 with 6:06 remaining in regulation.  Tech answered the NU score on a 10 play 80 yard drive that was highlighted by a 47 yard reception by All-American wide receiver Michael Crabtree on a fourth-and-5 from their own 36 yard line.  The gutsy call by head coach Mike Leach set up a 1 yard touchdown run by quarterback Graham Harrell to put the Red Raiders up 31-24 with 2:21 reaming on the clock.

NU would answer though, as quarterback Joe Ganz marched the Nebraska offense down the field for an eight play 79 yard scoring drive to tie the game up 31-31 with 29 second left in regulation.  Head coach Bo Pelini thought about going for two, but said he decided to let the game play out in overtime.

Nebraska won the toss, and Tech started with the ball first in OT.  The Red Raiders scored on four plays, most of which came on a 24 yard screen pass from Harrell to running back Baron Batch.  However, Tech missed the ensuing extra point, which gave the Huskers a chance to win.  With the score 37-31, Ganz threw an interception to Tech cornerback Jamar Wall on NU’s second play of overtime to end game 37-31.

Ganz finished 36-of-44 passing for 349 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Huskers, while running back Marlon Lucky had 23 touches for 144 yards.  Nebraska travels on the road next week to take on Iowa State in Ames.  The game is set for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff on the Versus Network.
